Motorized Lifts Go Beyond TVs to Elevate Outdoor Spaces

Posted on October 14, 2025

Affluent homeowners often incorporate premium electronics and sound systems into their outdoor living spaces, creating immersive entertainment environments that bring the luxury of large-screen TVs and surround sound outdoors. With motorized lift mechanisms, these systems can be effortlessly concealed or revealed at the touch of a button, preserving a refined aesthetic while offering convenience and versatility.

However, outdoor motorized lift systems extend far beyond televisions and LED wall displays. They can be engineered to accommodate a broad array of applications, supporting everything from recreational and architectural features to functional infrastructure components.

One example of this can be seen in motorized lift systems used in outdoor kitchens to discreetly conceal grills, smokers, pizza ovens, and refrigeration units. These integrated systems allow surfaces to transform seamlessly from relaxed lounging areas into fully equipped cooking or entertainment spaces, while also shielding appliances from the elements when not in use.

Beyond cooking areas, lifts play a key role in outdoor entertainment and recreation. Homeowners often use them to hide bar setups, game tables, and other leisure features. In one striking example, a lift was installed to raise a basketball hoop from behind a hedge, creating a regulation play space when desired—without permanently altering the landscape’s appearance.

Lifts are equally effective for aesthetic and functional applications. They can raise or retract planters, sculptures, and water features for dramatic visual impact or protection during harsh weather. In addition, they provide an elegant solution for concealing essential infrastructure elements such as air conditioning units, generators, or pumps, maintaining a clean, uncluttered environment without compromising accessibility or performance.

The underlying concept is simple: no matter the object being lifted, the mechanism withdraws to conceal the equipment, sustaining a clean, elegant appearance and protecting it from the elements. When extended, it raises the item to the most effective height and orientation for convenient use or display.

According to Art Walker, CEO of Auton Motorized Systems, when a motorized lift is designed for outdoor use, it must be constructed from durable, weather-resistant materials and housed within a robust enclosure, typically aluminum or stainless steel, that provides a complete seal against rain, snow, dust, and debris. This enclosure also protects the lift and its components from corrosion and deterioration caused by moisture, humidity, salt air, UV exposure, and temperature variations.

When a motorized lift is going to be used outdoors, it must be made from durable weather-resistant materials, it is also equipped with a solid, weather-resistant enclosure—made of either aluminum or stainless steel—which seals the TV and lift from rain, snow, dust and debris, as well as corrosion from moisture, humidity, salty air, UV rays, and temperature fluctuations.

Beyond protecting equipment from the elements, scale is an equally critical consideration. The lift system and the equipment it supports must be properly matched in size and weight to ensure smooth operation and prevent undue strain on the housing, motors, or structural components. Compatibility between the two is essential for long-term reliability and performance.

While dimensions differ by brand, the lift must be designed with weight-bearing tolerances and form factors that correspond to the specific size of the TV. For example, Auton’s Model BG and Model BG-PS motorized lifts support multiple dimensions with weight capacities of up to 300 lbs.

As technology expands into outdoor space, AV installers view this as the next phase in home upgrades. As with the home’s interior, they recognize the importance of keeping equipment out of sight, often using motorized lifts to conceal screens, boxes, and cables.

“In today’s competitive market, there are compelling reasons why AV installers should be aware of all the aesthetic and functional possibilities offered by advanced TV mounts,” says Walker.
